Overview:
The objective of Cmopany A, 23rd Infantry Battalion was to reach the St-Lo-Bayeux highway by the end of the day. The attack began with 1st Platoon attempting to cross a gully running 750 yards east to west along the battalion's front. 1st Platoon's tank support was stopped by the gully, but the armor provided fire support from behind this obstacle. The Germans held their fire until 1st Platoon entered the gully, at which point a murderous pre-registered artillery barrage combined with automatic weapons' fire resulted in heavy American casualties, hence the name "Purple Heart Draw". With support from two tanks from Company C of the 741st Tank Battalion, 2nd and 3rd Platoons of Company A attempted to flank the draw from the west.Attacker: American (A Company, 1st Battalion, 23rd Regiment, 2nd Division and C Company, 741 Tank Battalion)
Defender: German (D Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Regiment, 2nd Fallschirmjäger Division and Fallschirmjager-Panzer-Jäger-Abteilung 5)

2017-09-03 | (D) jon smith | vs | neil brunger | German win | Played 2 campaign turns.. yanks tried a push centre right and got stopped short of the draw but did take the bridge and cleared wire etc. CG2 yanks went hard for bridge rush, 4 tanks with most of thei rinfantry in support along with 2 OBA including a creeping barrage of smoke... they got mowed down as soon as smoke cleared, germans lost a mortar to malfunction and the 75mm to a critical hit from HE round.... yanks lost lots of infantry getting across bridge after second german mortar and the german 9-2 leader directing HMG fire on a ROF tear. Wasn't close but was fun enough. Don't think the campaign is well balanced at all... too easy for germans. IMHO, if germans don't defend the town and just defend gully from the start then hard work for yanks. Would recommend germans are forced to defend the town with a considerable force. |
