Overview:

The British had held the Hill throughout the night and had smashed the massive morning counterattack by the newly committed 9th SS Panzer Division coming up from Esquay. Ten assault guns of the 9th SS had been sent further east to Maltot and were ordered to counterattack the Hill in the afternoon. A detachment of 78 Panzer Grenadiers was to escort them. The battle group was under the command of Sturmbannfurhrer Kriz. At noon the exhausted defenders of the now shattered square wood had heard a rumor that they were to pull back to the northern slope. No one questioned the order that they had wanted to hear long ago, so they gathered themselves up and began their egress. Major Roberts of the 4th SLI had seen the rabble that were his comrades passing through his line and rallied them. He led them up the Hill along the Voie Romaine, past the Criox des Filandriers and put them to the task of preparing their defenses. Since there were no crewmen to be found (all had been killed or wounded) he put together groups of "volunteers" to man the anti-tank weapons. It was only moments later when they would have to use them.
