Overview:
After the capture of Carentan and the link-up of U.S. forces from Omaha and Utah beaches, the U.S. VII and XIX Corps began pushing south to seize Saint-Lô, a key road hub controlling access to central Normandy. The 2nd Armored Division "Hell on Wheels" was tasked to drive through the bocage toward the high ground around Hauts-Vents and Le Dézert. Opposing them was the Panzer-Lehr-Division, one of the most powerful German armored formations in Normandy, though it was weakened by heavy losses since June. 2nd Armored 's Combat Command A launched its attack toward Hauts-Vents and the ridge line commanding the approaches to Saint-Lô on 10 July. Armor pushed down narrow bocage lanes while armored infantry attempted to clear hedgerow after hedgerow, facing sharp German counterattacks. Several Shermans were knocked out by Panthers, concealed anti-tank guns, and panzerfaust ambushes. Fighting was close quarters, often at 100-200 meters, with German infantry holding bocage lines, sunken roads, and stone farmsteads.Attacker: American (1st Battalion, 41st Armored Infantry Regiment, Combat Command A, 2nd Armored Division and 2nd Battalion, 66th Armored Regiment with 702nd Tank Destroyer Battalion)
Defender: German (Abteilungen 1 and 2, Panzergrenadier-Lehr-Regiment 902, Panzer-Lehr-Division with Panzer-Regiment 130)
