Overview:

In the Battle of Maingkwan, Chinese forces, integrated with American units. launched an effective offensive against the Japanese 18th Division in the Hukawng Valley of northern Burma, using American-advised units and armored support. These divisions had recently received Western arms, including M1 carbines, bazookas, and Browning machine guns. The 112th and 113th Regiments of the Chinese 38th Division. under General Sun Li-jen and supported by American light tanks, spearheaded a push along the main valley, securing key positions between the Tawang and Tanai rivers and advancing toward Maingkwan from the north. The Chinese 22nd Division and GALAHAD moved around the Japanese right flank near Walawbum, cutting the Kamaing Road and blocking the Japanese retreat. In mid-May, after weeks of slogging through monsoon conditions and sweltering heat, the 38th received approval to strike toward Kamaing. General Sun's plan. the "Seton Block", had his 112th Regiment sweep around the Japanese east flank, crossing the Mogaung River to cut the Kamaing Road south of Seton.
