Overview:
After the Lvov-Sandomierz Offensive ended in early August. Soviet forces of the 1st Ukrainian Front under Marshal Konev seized a large bridgehead across the Vistula River near Baranów-Sandomierski in southern Poland. This bridgehead was crucial for the future push toward Germany and was heavily reinforced with Soviet armor. 11th Guards Tank Corps provided heavy tank support, including the 71st and 72nd Guards Heavy Tank Regiments, each equipped with the new IS-2 armed with the 122mm gun. Other formations filled out the bridgehead's defenders. Alarmed at the Soviet penetration, the Germans counterattacked the bridgehead. Forces included Panzer-Divisions 16 and 17 with Panzergrenadier-Division "Grossdeutschland," all supplemented with elements of schwere Panzer-Abteilung 501, re-equipped with about 45 of the brand-new Tiger II (Königstiger), marking the first time the Tiger II was committed to battle on the Eastern Front.Attacker: German (Panzergrenadier-Division "Grossdeutschland," Panzer-Division 16 and schwere Panzer-Abteilung 501)
