Overview:

The British entered Athens in October of 1944, hailed as liberators without having to fire a shot at the Germans. By December 5, however , with the Greek Communist Party (EAM) and its military wing(ELAS) in control of most of Athens, and indeed, the country itself, Churchill issued the following directive to General Scobie, head of the British occupation forces: "Do not hesitate to act as if you were in a conquered city, where a local rebellion is in progress. We have to hold and dominate Athens. With bloodshed, if necessary." The following day, Scobie's troops would seize EAM Headquarters. From that point, it was open warfare between the ELAS and a Greek government propped up by massive economic and military aid from Great Britain.
