Overview:
The 16-day long Battle of Shanghai marked the largest urban assault in the history of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army. The epic struggle reached its crescendo when Nationalists made a desperate last stand at the Shanghai Main Post Office, the only building from which all four bridges spanning Suzhou Creek (really a river) could be covered. To this point in the battle, the PLA had been careful not to subject the city to artillery bombardment in an attempt to keep the infrastructure intact. This policy meant that the initial assault would be carried out without any preparatory barrage and that the individual PLA soldier would pay the difference in blood.Attacker: Communists (People's Liberation Army)
