Overview:
As Operation Husky unfolded, the British 1st Airborne Division was called upon to secure several key positions along the eastern coast of Sicily. Insertion by gliders was hampered by high winds, and friendly and enemy flak contributed to a large number of casualties in the air and during glider landings. Those arriving on the ground found themselves widely scattered. As 1st Battalion, 1st parachute Brigade assaulted Primsole Bridge, 2nd Battalion moved to secure high ground positions – labeled “Johnny I”, “Johnny II”, and “Johnny III” – south of the bridge. 2nd Battalion occupied Johnny 1 but they were short on men. As dawn approached on 14 July, the familiar ripping sound of German machineguns came from the southwest.Attacker: German (Fallschirm Maschinegewehr Battalion 1)
Defender: British (2nd Battalion, 1st Paratroop Brigade, 1st Airborne Division)
