Overview:
The German operation codenamed “Wildente” used surprise to catch the Anglo-Norwegian units off-guard by barring their way south of Ranfjord. A steamer sailed up the fjord and landed 300 men and two guns in the small port of Hemnesberget. They could be resupplied by air and they threatened the Allied rear. Panicked by the boldness of the enemy landing, British High Command decided to evacuate by sea its units south of Ranfjord. The Norwegians were on their own. The only solution was a counterattack. With a few machine guns as their sole support and led by a spirited Danish officer, Captain Ellinger, they reached the first few houses of Hemnesberget. . .Attacker: German (1,.Kompanie, 138th Gebirgsjäger Regiment)
Defender: Norwegian (5th Brigade)

2023-05-07 | (D) Vic Lauterbach | vs | JM | German win | This small all-infantry fight played out as expected but provided some ASL drama. I drew the Norwegians and based my defense on the Norwegian 9-2 directed MMG. The MMGs are the key. If they survive, you have a good chance of hitting the German CVP cap, a much better chance than Holding 21 of the 33 building hexes. The 9-2 never broke; even a LMOR CH didn't faze him. Unfortunately, Jim's southern group outflanked, broke and captured my outpost 437 then overwhelmed the 457 with the other MMG and pushed into the village without any losses. Fire from the 9-2 directed MMG and two sniper attacks caused Jim trouble, but in the end the only unbroken Norwegian MMG was the one with the 9-2, Jim had 16 building hexes, and I had 9 CVP (!) giving Jim a narrow victory. This is a good tutorial for the Alpine hill rule [B3.11]. Jim's comment: This well-balanced little scenario is fun but a bit too much like other Norway scenarios in Journal Three.
2022-04-09 | (D) Scott Sherer | vs | Skip Dykeman | German win | April 2022 CAASL meeting. German dice were pretty hot and the Norwegians could not stand up to the onslaught. Captured their building hexes and I was only able to get 8 CVP.

2021-01-30 | (A) Jason Nichols | vs | Rob MacGinley | German win | Norwegians sited their MMG well and nearly took out a carelessly moved stack on turn 1. That would have inflicted 9 CVP and would have been the end for the Germans. Luckily they broke but did not die. Was able to penetrate in the South and break the squad manning the other MMG. Placed my one mortar (yes I was supposed to have two) in the woods in the centre and was able to inflict losses on the defending Norwegians. By turn 4 Germans were in a commanding position and the Norwegians didn't have much left and conceded. |
