Overview:
In the pre-dawn darkness at 0535 hours, the first of 41,140 motorized vehicles of Gruppe Kleist drove through the small defenseless Duchy of Luxembourg. Each of the three panzer divisions of Gruppe Kleist had an assigned route of advance, termed a Rollbahn by the panzertruppen. On the northernmost Rollbahn, Generalleutnant Rudolf Veils’ 2nd Panzer Division was held up at the hamlet of Nives. This was the first resistance they had encountered in four hours.Attacker: German (Schutzen Regiment 2, Panzer Division 2 and reinforcing lead elements of the 4th Panzer Regiment)
Defender: Belgian (1er Compagnie, 1er Regiment de Chasseurs Ardennais)

2024-11-08 | (A) manzoli andrea | vs | Galletto | German win
2022-10-17 | (D) Craig Renier | vs | Mark Thompson | Belgian win | Well fought scenario. The Germans came in force on the Belgian right with only the 50mm mortar harassing the left. The Belgians were offered a couple juicy shots on stacks moving in the open due to misjudged LOS, but the Germans successfully shock off the attacks. On the Belgian Turn 1 DFPh, the German mortar scored a CH against the Belgian 9-1 leader and MMC with MMG positioned in the church steeple. The leader was killed and the MMC broke, rallying finally as a HS many turns later. The Belgian mortar inflicted no casualties before malfunctioning. The Belgians, recovered the MMG and, despite having just one leader remaining, provided stiff resistance while gradually withdrawing. The Germans were at the gates of the village at Turn 3 with nearly their entire force intact, but the Belgians held on. With no flanking force of consequence to defend against, the Belgians were able to establish a defense in depth against the main attacking force while the tough village terrain with limited LOS allowed the defenders to fall back gradually under cover. With little time remaining, the Germans made a desperate attempt to break the Belgians using Adv Fire or eliminate them in CC. But there were too many defenders with too few attackers.
2022-10-16 | (A) Mark Thompson | vs | Belgians (Craig Renier) | Belgian win | Germans massed on Belgian's right and used armored assault effectively to reach outskirts of village on Turn 3 unscathed, but their failure to use armored assault to push further and more rapidly into the village in Turn 4 combined with the lack of a meaningful flanking force to divide the Belgian's attention, allowed the Belgians to fall back into a solid defense with minimal losses. The ensuing close-quarters fight and CCs demonstrated that the Germans were a turn too late to achieve their objectives. Well-played defense in depth.
2022-10-10 | (A) Craig Renier | vs | Mark Thompson | German win (VASL Log) | The Germans massed their attack on the Belgian right flank, initially entering slowly to maintain concealment for most of the force. Half squads pushed forward slowly stripping concealment from the defenders. At the end of Turn 2, the Belgians lost 2 HSs to CC, but the rest of the defenders remained in good order and well positioned to thwart an advance. At the end of Turn 3, the Germans were on the outskirts of the village, but the Belgians were well entrenched in the buildings. Turn 4 marked a major shift in the battle. The Germans advanced aggressively and survived all Def Fire unscathed, while the Belgians began to suffer heavy casualties. The 2 German AFVs were immobilized, one by ESB and one by TH, but one Belgian AFV was wrecked. The last surviving Belgians hunkered down in a stone building hoping to ride out the storm to the end of the game. They were encircled and then held in Melee. The last Belgian AFV, with a malf'ed MA, attempted an OVR without success and was subsequently wrecked. Finally, a German Def Fire into the Melee broke the Belgians securing a win for the Germans.
2022-10-09 | (D) Mark Thompson | vs | Germans (Craig Renier) | German win | Well executed attack by the Germans took advantage of Belgian forward defense, and Belgian failure to maintain concealment in village hastened their rapid encirclement and demise in CC. Good scenario to reinforce basic combined arms tactics, AFV OVR, sleeze freeze, etc. |
