Overview:
The second battle of Courland had begun. The Russian 5th Guards Tank Army had committed more than 400 tanks along a narrow front. The German line ruptured, and though limited counterattacks brought passing success, the Soviets forced the German 30th Infantry Division back to the forested hills of Mikeli. In nearby Autz, the 21st Luftwaffe Division disintegrated. A complete breakthrough was narrowly averted. The battle resumed the next day, centered around individual farms, strong-points, and key crossroads. Every last man the Germans could round up were pitted against the Soviets. Men stalked enemy tanks on foot, armed only with panzerschrecks and anti-tank hollow charges. Along the Auderi-Asito-Bruvelini road, four Tiger tanks of the 510th Heavy Panzer Battalion fought a six-hour battle against elements of the 19th Tank Corps.Attacker: Russian (19th Tank Corps)

2013-07-11 | (A) X von Marwitz | vs | David Wallace | German win | A scenario that features impressive toys on both sides: The German has a PaK43 and two Tiger VIE(L) along with a 9-2 AL, a hero, HIPsters with an extra +2 to find PFs & ATMMS. And that's on the defence... The Russian has 2x T43, 2x IS-2, 1x IS-2m with 8-1 armor leader, a DC, a .50Cal. In addition both sides get some infantry with usual SW and moderate leadership. The Point is about exiting 24 EVP for the Russians, which I think can only be achieved by tank mostly. A look at the map will show, that the terrain restricts and channels movement quite a bit. This can both work for and against the attacker. Then, there's a deep streams which impedes infantry movement especially. Furthermore, there is the possibility of rain, which - of course - started to fall in my Turn 1 as attacking Russian. Rain creates mud which increased movement yet further screwing up movement big time since in many places you cannot move any more without becoming CX even for a 1 hex move (for example moving up a lvl 1 woods hill. Crossing the stream is worse. That screwed up my plan of movement right from the start which involved avoiding some of the more obvious fields of fire for the ATG (with a TK# of 27). While I managed to avoid his HIPsters and to brush away his delaying infantry (delayed by rain, though), I immobed one tank due to mechanical reliability and made a mistake by exposing a second which was quickly punished by death. Getting off infantry was nearly impossible because crossing the deep stream would take a minimum of two turns more likely three while is was hard to cross via a bridge that was of course a covered choke point. Thus needing the the Stalins for the win, chances were low and indeed sqashed when a PF hit the turret of the IS-2m monster. It appears the .50Cal is intended to take out the PaK 43, but it is not easy to drag it into position to be a threat (and surviving possible angry defensive fire by that ATG). I have to admit that I have not quite figured out yet, how to best tackle this as the attacker. Much depends on the defensive setup, but then again, the Russian will not be able to avoid choke points. | ||
