Overview:
The Finns, seeking restitution for the Winter War of 1939, had erupted across the borders and breached the Soviet Karelian front even as the crisis to the south of Leningrad came. In a desperate attempt to salvage something and form a new defense line along the Sestra River, orders went out to break off and retreat southward. One such unit was the 131st Border Battalion, which was to serve as a rearguard. At 1530, orders arrived releasing them to save themselves. . .if they could. Behind them a bakery was on fire, the town hall was ablaze, and ammunition was dwindling. Nevertheless, their young officers organized a fighting withdrawal towards the hills in an attempt to reach newly established lines.

2018-12-09(A) Jeff B vs Ben Stacey Finnish winFinns hit the east side hard, pounding the Russians into submission as they swept forward en masse. Turn 2 was mop up time for them as the Russians scrambled to reposition to the rowhouses in the center of the board. Turn 3 saw the Finns control the S row, blasting the remaining Russian stragglers as they tried to dash across. Turn 4 saw them charge and surround the last remaining Russian bastion and batter them into surrender by the end of the turn. The only unit left to deal with was the as-yet still hidden MMG squad. He was discovered and surrounded on Turn 5 and locked up in melee, allowing the Finns free rein to charge toward the exit.
2018-11-17(D) Jeff B vs Ben Stacey Russian winFinns had an absolutely brutal first turn, losing 5 squads. There was really no recovering from this and, with the Russians matching them in numbers and having the better position, they called it a game after Turn 3.
2018-08-04(D) Kermit Mullins vs Dan Best Finnish winUgh...this scenario is so much more challenging than I ever think. My Russians stumbled about, but still managed to kill 8 Finnish Squads and exit off 12 VP...but Dan exited 19 VP to get the win. Great game!
2018-05-27(A) Jonathan Kapleau vs Duenskie, Ron Russian win
2018-04-03(D) Jeff B vs Phil Wentworth Russian winMy opponent and I had played this one before but he wanted to try his hands as the attacking Finns again as the first time it ended disastrously. Since this was a pickup game I just recycled my original setup that worked so well without changing a unit. If the first time was a disaster this was a catastrophe. The Finns got absolutely shredded in the opening couple rounds. Whereas my sniper was extremely cold the first time around, it was a much different story this time. By the middle of Turn 3 the Finns were still a move away from reaching the back of the original Russian setup so he figured it was right to call it a day.
