Overview:

Three months of brutal warfare had turned men desperate. especially within the Soviet army as units fought to escape encirclement. The Soviet Southwestern Front had largely dissolved into two pockets as organized resistance collapsed. Tremendous amounts of material and prisoners were collected by the Germans. Still, the final days of battle were not a simple case of corralling the mass of units in captivity. The Soviets could be incredibly stubborn, refusing at times to budge even under the most intensive fire. The men knew that their only hope of escape was to breakthrough to the east. They fought tooth and nail to do so, with the concomitant exorbitant losses. Near the small town of Melechi, the Soviets managed to overwhelm Infanterie-Regiment 35. To close the encirclement again, the nearby Panzer-Division 9 was rushed to the town.
