Overview:
The direct attack on the German positions along the Bernhardt Line in and around the small village of San Pietro began on 8 December by Major General Geoffrey Keyes' II Corps of the US Fifth Army. San Pietro was defended by two battalion-sized elements of the 15th Panzergrenadier Regiment. In the center, the 141st Infantry Regiment, US 36th Infantry Division would attack San Pietro itself.
