Overview:
Operation SILBERFUCHS was launched on 29 June. This was the German-Finnish effort to capture Murmansk and the Murmansk railroad. The German Mountain Corps Norway had crossed the border and consisted of two tough and battle-tested German mountain divisions. However, the Germans had counted on supply roads that did not actually work as such. The mountain troops could not move much faster than a kilometer per hour. By 4 July, the Germans had successfully established a bridgehead across a river in the rocky northern terrain almost devoid of tree growth. Plans to proceed would have to wait as the Soviets launched a series of attacks including an amphibious landing on the Rybachry peninsula which threatened the German flank.Attacker: Russian (52nd Rifle Division)
Defender: German (Gebirgs-Division 2)

2024-12-05 | (D) Andy Bagley | vs | Mike Grogan | A | Russian win | Interesting scenario with a 'mind games' element in that the German player does not know the Russian VCs until they become apparent during the game. We gave the Russians the balance based on previous results. The Russians attacked on both flanks early, making me think the hilltops were his objectives, but then shifted to the centre, so I knew by about Turn 3 that he was after the victory buildings. The Russians took casualties from flanking fire (at least until my mortar malf'd), and I was able to shift some reinforcements back to the centre, so thought I'd be able to hold. And I would have just held on, but in a last-turn CC his conscript squad managed to ambush my 9-1 leader and squad (!) in one of the buildings. He then rolled a 3 DR to wipe me out, winning control of the last building and with it the game. Great fun though. | |
2023-11-17 | (A) Simon Staniforth | vs | Richard Webb | Russian win | Played at Bounding Fire Blackpool 2023. An interesting tactical choice for the Russians with the Victory Locations being a hilltop on either flank and a central village, needing to take 2 of the 3. I thought my opponent would expect me to go for the village and one of the hilltops so I split my infantry force exactly 50 / 50 and went for the 2 hilltops. My opponent agrees that he had not put sufficient German force on the right crest lines to stop my initial moves so the Russians gained an early advantage sweeping one of the hilltops in T2 with the support of the T-26 platoon. I decided to keep this on board and accept the Unit Substitution risk, feeling their firepower and potential to generate some encirclement on the opposite hilltop would be a greater advantage. So it proved and as forces had to be redeployed from the village to assist with the defence of the second hilltop, that came under threat also forcing a German concession. |
