Overview:

The 2nd Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment finally reached Taft Avenue and proceeded to attack the Japanese holed up in the Philippine University and Hospital Complex. The Japanese had fortified themselves inside the hospital and, against Geneva Convention rules, showed no reluctance to kill both patients and hospital staff at their whim. To bolster the defense, they employed numerous automatic weapons, light artillery guns, and mortars to cover all likely approaches. On 15 February, the troopers of the 5th Cavalry Regiment also reached the area and moved in to attack from the south across Herran Street. Bitter fighting ensued in every building of this large complex. The 148th was being slowed in their attacks because they still had forces engaged in clearing in the new Manila Police Station north of the complex. The Americans were also restricted by their attempts to get nearly 7,000 civilians out of the area to safety.

2024-06-17(D) Ron Garcia vs Darryl M. American winThis was one of those scenarios that when I laid it out, I thought there is no way I was going to win as the Japanese. I was right. There is just too much to defend and not enough to defend it with. I even basically gave up three buildings, and I still was swarmed. With no real AT assets (one 47L AT Gun, a Buried Bomb, and 6 AT mines) to defend vs 10 tanks and three HT's, the Americans can move around at will (T-H Heroes are very luck dependent). I was also a bit overwhelmed by the amount of hidden stuff I had to keep track of. I've never played using VASL, but I have read that it is good for that sort of thing. Perhaps that's the way to play this scenario. Anyway, we ended this one early.

2022-11-11(A) Jeff B vs Steve Etzelmueller American winAmericans attacked across a very wide eastern front. My opponent said he had never seen me so spread out, and he's probably right. Between their tanks and BAZs the Americans laid a lot of smoke/WP Turn 1. The breeze would eventually multiply this. I scratched my head on what to do with those 14-hex minimum range mortars, so I decided to put them on one of the few rooftops available in the Ermita Apartments. Of course that was illegal as these mortars cannot be dm. I can't say I missed them one iota. While initially not all that outnumbered, the fact of the matter is the Japanese just have way too much to protect. Certainly all their tricks can help spread their thin defense a little, but when the American reinforcements enter there is just no stopping them. At 12 turns this one is just way too long, and a more realistic VC is probably to have the Americans take every building. Even that should be fairly easy. This scenario is simply a joke, and we called it after 6 Turns with the Americans having three buildings completely in hand and 3/4 remaining (including the hospital) in realistic danger of falling the next turn. I'm done playing Manila; it's been a very disappointing product.
