Overview:
As the prelude to the liberation of Marseille, Free French Forces were ordered to capture and hold the highway triangle at Aubagne-Gemenos-Couin, which lay to the east of the city. In their way stood the veteran 244th Infanterie-Regiment, ensconced within a formidable series of mines and roadblocks. Leading the Allied advance was the 2nd Groupe de Tabors Marocains, composed almost entirely of North African colonial troops who wore striped djellabas (cloaks), the sight of which lent the French landscape, as one veteran would later recall, "a distinctly African appearance." He would also recall that many pf these same Moroccan soldiers "carried vicious-looking knives."Attacker: Free French (2nd Groupement de Tabors Marocains and 2nd Régiment du Cuirassiers)
Defender: German (244th Infanterie-Division)
