Overview:
After the city of Antwerp was finally liberated on the 4th of September 1944, Field Marshall Mongomery's next plans, were to push further north towards the Netherlands, gaining benefit out of the gap between the German 7th and 15th Armies. For a fast approach into the Reich, intact bridges over the Rhine were crucial. Montgomery's staff chose Arnhem as a crossing point, and plans for a combined operation consisting of airborne and land forces were made. While the airborne part needed some preparation time, the land force, XXX Corps, was still in full swing and so British units moved ahead through Belgium towards Eindhoven, to get the most out of the momentum. After a short break for 24 hours on 6th of September, XXX Corps resumed its advance. From that point on, the situation changed drastically.Attacker: British (Welsh Guards Battle Group, 32nd Guards Infantry Brigade with 2nd Armoured Recce Regiment, Welsh Guards)
