Overview:
Following the unsuccessful "Spring Awakening" offensive in Hungary, the 6th SS Panzer Army was given the responsibility for the defense of Vienna and the southeastern approaches to the Reich. Not wanting a protracted struggle for the city, Kravchenko sent the 9th Guards Mechanized Corps on a flanking maneuver to the west. One raiding group composed of the 46th Guards Tank Brigade, as well as a company of handpicked paratroopers and supporting elements, made a dash for the city center.Attacker: Russian (46th Guards Tank Battalion, 364th Heavy SP Gun Regiment and 304th Parachute Battalion)
Defender: German (SS) (SS-Panzergrenadier-Regiment 4 "Der Führer", SS-Panzer-Division 2 "Das Reich")

2020-09-01 | (A) Paul Works | vs | Dan Best | Russian win | My intent as the Russians was to take all the stone buildings on Board b and put pressure on the German defenses in Building J2 on Board a. This would force the Germans to counter-attack onto Board b, but worry about defending building J2 at the same time. On Turn 1, I aggressively moved two of my M4s into bypass of stone buildings and also (likely) in LOS of the sides of the two Panthers. I should have Bounding Fired, but hoped Dan would not see the tricky LOSes. Well... he did see one of them and turned his Panther's frontal armor toward me. He missed on that Final Fire shot, but I hit with APCR and Immobilized his tank. That M4 died during Dan's PFPh, the crew did their job though. My other tank just missed a side shot at the other Panther by the slimmest of LOS margins (the LOS was blocked). My infantry on Turn 1 got all the way across Board b and occupied all but one of the stone buildings on that board. On Dan's turn, he moved up to attempt to counter-attack; with 8 ML SS, you might think that should work. Unfortunately forDan, two SS squads broke and a third went berserk. That last squad drew some fire, but got shot down on his charge. Drawing that fire did allow him to place a DC successfully on my 8-1 stack of troops - breaking the 8-1 and accompanying 6-2-8, but not the 3-2-8 with them. Dan's 6-5-8 advanced into CC with that 3-2-8, but my HS killed him and survived Dan's HtH CC attack (ouch). Dan's other Panther moved to a powerful position surrounded by walls in front of the J2 building. On Turn 2, my tank that missed the Turn 1 LOS was in LOS of the Panther behind the walls; however, I missed APCR and decided I would try to move out of LOS - the SSR allowing Russian tanks to claim building TEM while in bypass helped on that decision. So, assuming that Dan would hold his Panther's shot (retaining his TCA) for the good shot vs my tank in bypass, I moved my other M4 into LOS (out of the TCA of the Panther) and took an APCR shot - no APCR; I then took a normal shot, hoping for a lucky turret hit (knowing even then I would have only a 3 TK...). Doh - I malf'd its MA! I backed that M4 out of LOS, then moved my ISU-152 to try the same trick (so to speak). This time, however, the ISU rolled a "2" to hit. With a modified 42 To Kill number (!) (-14 for the Panther's turret armor), this resulted in a burning Pz VG. At this point, Dan called the game. Too many losses, with too many Russians left. I think this is a pretty fun one (tainted a bit, as always, when you roll a "2" for a crit hit); easily could have gone the other way but for a handful of die rolls. Although the ROAR record does not reflect it, I think the Russians have a better than even chance in this scenario. | ||
