Overview:
Following the unsuccessful "Spring Awakening" offensive in Hungary, the 6th SS Panzer Army was given the responsibility for the defense of Vienna and the southeastern approaches to the Reich. Not wanting a protracted struggle for the city, Kravchenko sent the 9th Guards Mechanized Corps on a flanking maneuver to the west. One raiding group composed of the 46th Guards Tank Brigade, as well as a company of handpicked paratroopers and supporting elements, made a dash for the city center.Attacker: Russian (46th Guards Tank Battalion, 364th Heavy SP Gun Regiment and 304th Parachute Battalion)
Defender: German (SS) ("Der Fuhrer" Regiment, 2nd SS Panzer Division "Das Reich")

2025-01-26 | (D) Vic Lauterbach | vs | JM | German (SS) win | Jim and I picked this small, late-war DASL scenario to play in one VASL session. I drew the defending Germans and set up to grab the buildings south of the bJ2-H5 road figuring the fight would be for bI4 and aJ2. Jim surprised me by going all out for bJ2. I lost the big CC in bI4 but got a 548 into bB4 and won that CC to win the game. Jim: The key to this game is the "and/or" in the VC. An early 2KIA shot took out my 9-1 and a 628, the SU-152 died without firing a shot, and my 8 ML squads couldn't pass MCs (Vic's 658s never failed one). Things looked bad. Infantry is precious in this fight, as both sides start with the same number of squads. I gave up on taking aJ2 and went for holding 5 of 9 stone buildings on board b. By turn 4, all the AFVs were dead, and it was an infantry fight for stone buildings. Vic went after bI4, bD2 and bB4. In spite of some late heroics in CC, I lost the CC in bB4. Good game with an exciting ending after a very lopsided start! | ||
