Overview:
In the aftermath of Operation CITADEL, Soviet attacks in the Ukraine followed the usual pattern: masses of med and machines thrown at the lines of Panzerkorps III, only to be thrown back by German counterattacks. However each time the new front line would be further west. In an effort to flank the SS divisions defending west of Kharkov, Major General Ivan Galanin’s 4th Guards Army threw more fresh troops at Hoernlein’s “Grossdeutshland” Division.Attacker: Russian (5th Guards Airborne Division)
Defender: German (Bataillon II, Panzergrenadier-Regiment 'Grossdeutschland')

2023-03-03 | (A) David Ramsey | vs | Paul Legg | Russian win | Excellent scenario! Although principally this is in infantry only game, there's a lot to it. The decision points for the Germans as to whether to gamble with the HMG and MTR up-front or safer, but less effective at the back means there's a constant pressure to decide whether it's worth revealing units to make your defence sturdier meaning the withdrawal becomes more difficult is a great element. In this playing, the HMG was up front, but eventually overrun, and with it the 9-2, whilst the mortar revealed itself only to miss its only shot and have the crew break and die for failure to rout instantly - essentially losing the 16 points that were sorely needed after the Russians took 3 buildings for the 9 points at the start. Nice scenario - really recommended. |
