Overview:
The Soviet 9th Guards Mechanized Corps broke through to the Tordai Gorge and proceeded to surround the Hungarian 25th Reconnaissance Battalion. This breakthrough put the Soviet tanks at Szind, only four kilometers from the doorstep of Torda. The Hungarian 11th Infantry Battalion and the 10/2 Assault Artillery Battery counterattacked, surprising the tank crews of the Soviet 46th Guards Tank brigade in the process. Captain Janos Bozsoki, leading his six Zrinyi II assault guns, knocked out approximately eighteen Soviet tanks during the day’s fighting, preventing the encirclement of Torda. Later in the day Bozoki returned to the front line to rescue seriously wounded comrades and recover damaged assault howitzers. He was awarded the Officers’ Gold Medal for Bravery.Attacker: Hungarian (25th Reconnaissance Battalion, Hungarian 25th Infantry Division)

2023-04-30 | (A) Ron Garcia | vs | Darryl M. | Hungarian win | As the Hungarians, I almost snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in this one. I set up the near the middle stretched out to the north. I had my AC's on the road set up for a turn 1 northern run off the west edge. My friend placed his forces spread out along the length of board 18. He placed one tank on either flank and one a bit south of row Q on the small strip of road near the border. Turn 1 went great as I got the lone Russian Sherman to the north to react to the incoming Zrinyi's. The ATR in that area was in a bad location so the way was clear except for one thing - I forgot to move my AC's! In the ensuing Russian player turn, the Sherman near the border rolled up and took out one of my AC's. Luckily, the second escaped and made it off the board on turn two after I dispatched the northern Sherman. Running all out, I manged to get a further 11 CVP worth of units off the board on turn 3. Quick, fun scenario. I think it favors the Hungarians as their reinforcements are totally disposable (except for one Zrinyi). They can afford to be aggressive with them to free up the escaping reconnaissance battalion. |
