Overview:

The German Sixth Army was fighting in Stalingrad, it's northern flank was being held by the forces of Germany's Allies: the Second Hungarian Army, the Romanian Third Army, and the ltalian Eighth Army. ln an effort to provide "corset stays" to hold these three armies together, the XXXXVIII Panzer Korps under Generalleutnant Heim with the weak 22nd Panzer Division, the Romanian 1st Armoured Division, and elements of the 14th Panzer Division, were deployed close behind them. On 19 November at 0530 hours, Operation URANUS opened with artillery barrages battering the entire front line. The Russian armoured spearheads of the 5th Tank Army rolled orer the 37mm and 47mm anti-tank guns of the Romanians, tearing the front wide open. As streams of bewildered Romanians fled to üre rear, the Soviet spearheads were close behind them. The commander of the 22nd Panzer Division's Panzer Regiment, Oberst von Oppeln desperately tried to acquire fuel as his tanks had to be moved to avoid damage; but initially Oberst Oppeln's most dangerous enemy turned out to be mice. Of his Panzer Regiments 104 tanks, only 31 were in operation; the remainder were victims of mice, who had chewed through the vehicles cables and wires, causing short circuits and explosions. Oberst vän Oppeln scraped together 31 tanks, moved out to meet the Russians, attempting to cover the retreat of the Romanians.
