Overview:
In the 1st Infantry Division’s drive to capture Aachen, the 1st Battalion of Col. George Smith’s 18th Infantry Regiment was ordered to capture a fortified hill near Haaren known as Crucifix Hill. Employing special pillbox assault teams equipped with flamethrowers, Bangalore torpedoes, and demolition charges, the 1st Battalion would also be provided with direct fire support from a battery of tank destroyers and self-propelled guns. As the leading rifle platoon of Company C assaulted the first pillbox, flanking fire from a nearby gun emplacement caught the platoon in a crossfire.Attacker: American (Company C, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division / Ranger Company)
Defender: German (Volksgrenadier-Division 246)

2023-10-04 | (A) Michael Rodgers | vs | David Goldman | American win | I believe this is a tough scenario for the Americans. They must leave something behind because of the random German reinforcements. The flank approaches do not look practical and there is not much cover, so it is a frontal assault against pillboxes and trenches on a hill. I won mostly because of my opponent's bad dice.
2021-04-11 | (A) Rich Weiley | vs | Dave Wallace | German win | Leader losses hampered my attack and the Rangers got bogged down trying to reduce one bunker. Lost control of two of the victory buildings on the last German turn and didn't have sufficient forces to take them back.

2020-11-12 | (A) David Garvin | vs | JR Tracy | German win | Wow, what a match. Played as Round 1 of the NY State Championship (Virtual) 2020. JR had Germans and I the attacking Americans. In the end, my mixed force got mixed results. The final decision came down to the final fusillade from JR on my Rangers who had to dash to a firing line for the final line of German Trenches. JR's rolls were devastating and broke all my guys, resulting in them all breaking. He also got 4 of my 5 AFVs for a total of 8 points. Noteworthy was one of his leaders, a 8-0 who went heroic, then twice wounded and took out an M 10 in close combat on a natural DR of 3! Not to worry, my wounded 9-2 advanced into the hex next turn and ended up returning the favor. Great game!
2020-11-09 | (D) Scott Fischbein | vs | David Goldman | German win | David did a great job making slow but steady progress while keeping his attacking forces mostly out of LOS as they crept up the hill towards my cluster of pillboxes and trenches. Things were looking fairly close, until my reinforcements "teleported" into a couple of buildings and managed to capture one of them... and then it got worse for the Americans when another set of reinforcements won a 1-4 CC with snake eyes.... thus putting the required VC out of reach for the Germans. Played this as the first round of the vAlbany 2020 - enjoyed playing my first game against David, who was a knowledgeable and gracious opponent, but wasn't a big fan of the scenario as the defender. Seemed like it was a fun puzzle for the attacker, but as the defender it was a tedious exercise in repeatedly looking at LOS to discover that there was none available, and making a few minor (but admittedly important) decisions about small adjustments in the mostly static defensive line. |
