Overview:
As part of Operation Nordwind, Hitler wanted to send his panzers south out of the Hagenau woods, the gateway to the Alsatian plain. For most of January 8th, the 21st Panzer and 25th Panzergrenadier Divisions fought their way through the old Maginot Line defenses. On January 9th they came to the twin towns of Hatten-Rittershoffen. Here there would be a week of ferocious back and forth fighting which one panzer commander called "one of the hardest and most costly battles that had ever raged on the Western Front".Attacker: German (Panzergrenadier Regiment 35 and II./119 Panzergrenadier Division 25 with Panzer Flamm Company 352 (Kampfgruppe Proll))
Defender: American (1st Battalion, 242nd RCT, 42nd)

2023-05-30 | (A) O Ramaille | vs | Padouc | American win | Expecting (with reason) minefields and wire in the woods to the South, the German attacked frontally from the East but broke too easily under heavy fire from the Americans. Demolition charges and FT finally helped to enter the village. The Flamm-Panzer cleared the Southern buildings but the American defenders still held the rowhouse building. The final assault failed to clear the defenders in the 1st level of buildings and despite 3 HoBs providing a hero and 2 berserk units (unable to advance for CC... How lucky I am!) the German was unable to control even one hex of this row house. A clear American victory. | ||

2021-04-11 | (A) Jeff B | vs | Steve Etzelmueller | German win | Under cover of smoke I made a hard push from the south on the outskirts of town. A HS sentry out front in the church was fried to a crisp by my FT tank, but a flame started as well. This could well prove to be problematic to my attack. It was not without significant cost however, as one of my tanks was knocked out by street fighting and another immobilized in a fairly useless position. It was able to make itself useful for one more round by dropping some additional smoke before running out. An American squad turned berserk and would be mowed down by my kill stack. Meanwhile I just used brute force to continue pushing the defense backwards. An American squad in the west had a chance to slow me down for a necessary turn or two, but bungled its CC attempt and was dispatched with alacrity. After just three turns the Americans took enough beating and threw in the towel. The flame in the building never did blaze up. The PBs are simply silly hood ornaments that should have no bearing on the game |
