Overview:
In early May 1945, the Czechs rose up against the obviously defeated Germans. My May 5, the uprising had spread to Prague itself, an important logistical and industrial center, and home to thousands of Volksdeutsche. Waffen SS units from around the area were ordered to arch to Prague, quell the uprising and protect German civilians. One unit that fought its way into Prague was the “Der Fuhrer” Regiment of the 2nd SS “Das Reich” Panzer Division, under Otto Weidinger. On the night of May 6/7, the regiment entered Prague, clearing barricades until arriving at the Troya Bridge, where it was met with fierce small arms fire that stopped the advance. . . . . after the war, the bridge was renamed Most Barikádníku, “The Bridge of the Barricade Defenders”.Attacker: German (SS) (Elements of Der Führer Regiment, SS Division 2 "Das Reich")
Defender: Czech Partisans (Elements of Bartoš Command)
