Overview:
Large numbers of Russian men and material had been cut off and surrounded in a pocket centered on Uman, near Kiev. The encircled Russians, searching for a means to escape, had already attempted to break out to the east with disastrous results. To the south, however, the Dneiper River bend was still held by strong Russian units. Barring access to the sector was Gebirgskorps XLIX, comprised primarily of battle-tested but exhausted mountain troops. In desperation, the remnants of three Russian armies wheeled south to attempt a breakout.Attacker: German (Regiment 91, Gebirgsjäger-Division 4)

2017-10-22 | (A) Andy Beaton | vs | Richard Hooks | German win | Russians stopped by very effective (lucky) German fire lanes and some key close combats. Two Russian tanks were lost to German ATR and MG fire.
2015-09-05 | (D) Jim Kloss | vs | Bob Eury | German win | A very unique scenario. I enjoyed the pre-determined secret entry areas and the motley Soviet order of battle. I believe the Russians would have a better chance at winning if the Germans were not elite, however that would be an unrealistic representation of a Gebirgsjager unit. Although the Soviet's '1' ELR was frustrating for me, it certainly did provide the feel of a shattered unit trying to effect a breakout. AP43 is definitely on my short list of 'must play again' scenarios.
2010-01-01 | (A) David Ramsey | vs | Martin Barker | German win | Oh dear. Pulled a win out for the Germans, but this might be a rare event. Russian forces can split up or come down one side (which they did). Why wouldn't they just all come down one side and play out the massacre that it should be... Got very lucky with a CC and deadly mortars to keep me in the game that looked lost by turn 2. |
