Overview:
During Patton’s drive towards Metz, German units in the area were, for the most part, disorganized. Sometimes a bold move by a small number of American troops would result in the capture of large numbers of prisoners. In some locations, the Germans were more prepared and American units would suffer serious losses. Thionville was one of those places. Cavalry troops pushed the outpost garrison to the edge of town, but they were suddenly counterattacked by the better part of a battalion of Landsers. With the arrival of some German recon units, the cavalry troopers found themselves cutoff in the town hall, which was the only stone building in the area. Just as quickly, two M8 armored cars appeared with much needed added firepower. . .Attacker: German (Elements of VolksGrenadier Division 559 and Aufklarungs Abteilung, 17th SS PanzerGrenadier Division)
Defender: American (Elements of the 2nd Cavalry Reconnaissance Group)

2022-10-12 | (D) Mark Thompson | vs | Steve B (Germans) | American win | The Germans made strong progress against the American left flank but were halted by a stalwart HOB-created Hero and Fanatic 6-6-7 while 3 straight 1 SA DRs eliminated two German leaders and broke squads in reserve. The German AFVs made in-roads on the right flank but were unable to push past the American armored cars, which effectively covered the approaches to the victory building with canister and AAMG/CMG fire. The Germans conceded in turn 6 with insufficient forces facing three 6-6-7 squads (two fanatic), a 9-1, 8-1, and 8-0 leader in the victory building. A tough assignment for the Germans made nigh impossible by the American's decisive sniper attacks, lucky HOB, and low IFT DRs. Good combined arms scenario. | ||
