In the spring of 1944, Streifkorps Sudfrankreich, a group of rigorously trained, airborne/airlanding soldiers was tasked with anti-partisan deployment in the highly active FFI region of southern France. In June of 1944 a self-proclaimed FFI Republic was established on the heights of Vercors Plateau. At 9:30 on the morning of July 21, aircraft approached the town of Vassieux from the south. Instead of expected arms and supplies from the Allies, they were German fighters and bombers leading a stream of troop-packed gliders. . .
