A little more than a week after the invasion of Poland, German units of the 10th Army were at the gates of Warsaw. Despite some panic and confusion, the citizens were urged to help with anti-tank ditches and defenses. The 4th Panzer Division was tasked with penetrating the city in the Ochota district although not well-suited to the task. Awaiting these forward elements were guns and soldiers of the Polish 29th Infantry Division. They had moved into the district the previous evening and the guns were aimed over open sights to cover the area's avenues with deadly crossfire. The war's first contest over Warsaw was about to begin.
Attacker: German (Panzer Regiments 35 & 36, 4th Panzer Division and 217th Infantarie Division)

Poles tried to defend board 20 and take out at least one tank with each gun as it was revealed. Started well with even the ATRs scoring kills and the HMG nest holding up most of the infantry. However, the Germans bought lots of smoke grenades and FT fuel with them. Once they crossed the VC road there was very little of the Polish force left to stop them. Poles conceded turn 5 with 26 CVP and 27 buildings under German control (needed 28). Poles only had 2 GO squads, 4 guns, the MMG and two 7-0 leaders left (one leader was broken with 2 extra broken squads). Germans still had all of their leaders and 15 GO squads rampaging out of site of all the guns.

Polish set up deep within their zone in fortified locations making it difficult for the German to dent their defence. Germans lost two AC's on turn 1 and found it difficult to penetrate the Polish positions. Germans capitulated on Turn 3.

Germans were aggressive with the tanks and lost 9 with crews. Loss of three squads put them over the CVP cap.

Good early war tanks vs lots of AT guns and fanatic Polish troops. Wire and fortified locations in the centre of the battle slowed the Germans down who missed out on the VC by 3 hexes at the end. As featured on Illuminating Rounds episode 5.

My plan was to attack hard in the center and east and swing up. I placed FL-capable units with AFV protection on all the roads that had long LOS to prevent the defense from reinforcing any weak spots. The only weak spots to be had were my own however. Not to take anything away from Ken whatsoever (as he is certainly a very good player), but this was probably the worst dicing I have ever seen. Not only were his rolls hot (probably a pip lower than average), but mine were ice cold (a pip higher I am guessing). This, combined with his superbly placed guns and multiple fortified location, made my job extremely difficult. I lost four vehicles on Turn 2 alone, but losing my 9-2 and two squads on Turn 3 probably sealed the deal. I pressed on but eventually hit the CVP cap at the end of Turn 5. Despite all this it was still a fun game against a great opponent. I would gladly play this one again as either side.

German attack got around fortified building 45DD9 on Polish flank. Poles were tough in CC, but German firepower proved too much.

German conceded after 5 turns because not enough assets were across the victory road. CVP was at 30, of which 5 were tanks. Excellent early war scenario.

Polish guns took out 5 vehicles and immobilized 2 more, but there was still plenty left which allowed the Germans to freeze positions and cut off rout paths to eliminate defenders. Intense action from turn one with lots of action.

Aggressive Germans lost most AFV's and sneaky HIP's grabbed building's back. Good fun with a chance to dish out pain on the D
