Overview:

Even though the German invasion of Russia was a surprise, the Soviet command in the south was able to start implementing their war plan. This included mobilizing various earmarked units for a counterattack. The 43rd Tank Division was mobilized and directed west to enter and defend Dubno. But like so much that happened those opening days, the situation rapidly changed by the hour. Dubno was taken by the 11th Panzer Division before the 43rd Tank Division got its orders. Now the Soviets had to fight their way west. At 1400 hours, the 43rd Tank Division launched an attack to clear Varkovichi. Varkovichi was a town east of Dubno which was seized that morning by the Germans as a bridgehead for their next objective. According to the 43rd Tank Division commander, his attack was successful until the Germans blew up all the bridges as they retreated, stripping his division of the capability of breaking through to Dubno. The 11th Panzer Division assessment on the clash with the 43rd Tank Division was far from rousing and differed greatly from that of the Russians. Per their history, they did not blow any bridges and the Russian counterattack only delayed their march east for a few hours. At Varkovichi, the 43rd lost its only two KV tanks (they both caught on fire), as well as fifteen T-26 tanks (of these, four were flame throwing tanks) and 128 soldiers.

2026-06-23(A) Paolo Cariolato vs Maurizio Grassi German winThe scenario is scripted around the possible attack axes. The map leaves very little room for maneuver, and what can be done is easily predictable. This brings the Russian little room for maneuver his tanks under the fire of the German guns, where the armor gap really makes itself felt.

There is no contest. The Russian tanks simply have no chance against the German AFVs: their armor is far too light.

In practice, the game was over on Turn 1, when the KV — the piece on which the whole Russian attack depends — broke its gun and then rolled a 6 on the repair attempt. Maurizio’s low rolls did the rest.

But I repeat: the real problem is that the scenario has no variety. I do not recommend it.
2026-03-06(D) Simon Staniforth vs Mark Blackmore German winA good fun scenario with the usual interesting armour match up for Russia 1941. The Germans didn’t set up too far forward and tried to keep their infantry alive for the final Russian push, deploying a number of their squads. Proved to be just enough, despite the AL being recalled by the Sniper in the best Panzer III towards the end
2025-11-10(D) nathan wegener vs Paul Works Russian winThis scenario was a lot of fun. Good unit mix and options for attacking and defending. In our playing I had over committed too far forward and the Russian tanks were merciless.
