Overview:

"Storm and Stress" -- On June 22, 1941, the invasion of the USSR began. Panzergruppe 4, of the 1.Panzerdivision advanced eastward towards Leningrad through the Baltic States. The first battles were tough but victorious, with the division using its experience acquired in Poland and France. "Die Erste" also benefited from a strong mechanization, with a large part of the infantrymen of its two Schutzen-Regiments being transported in Sdkfz 251s, a unique case within the Panzerdivisions. Its Kampfgruppen, therefore, combined mobility and firepower, as demonstrated on the morning of June 24 by the attack on the Gut Murai collective farm by the mechanized battalion of SR 113.
