Overview:

At the height of the Battle of Hürtgen Forest, the Americans had only a toehold on a few villages inside the German border, one of which was Schmidt. The American attack on Schmidt had been met with unusually light opposition and the GIs who entered the town began digging in anticipation of the inevitable response. They did not have to wait long. At down on November 4th, following a preparatory artillery barrage, German infantry and Armor attacked from the southeast. Once panzers entered the town and rumors spread that the town had been surrounded, panicked American troops began to flee north to Kommerscheidt, where officers and NCOs, pistols drawn, desperately attempted to restore order. At dawn the following day, the Germans pressed the attack.
