Overview:
In the northern portion of Pest, the Soviet advance at the beginning of January 1945 had progressed fairly well, as the main elements of the 30th Rifle Corps, 7th Guards Army, of Marshal Rodion Malinovsky's 2nd Ukrainian Front had pushed into the Újpest and Rákospalota areas on the outskirts of Budapest. By 8 January, the Soviets had advanced to the northern boundary of the Rákosrendezo marshaling yard, anchored at the southern end by the Rákosrendezo railway station. On the morning of 9 January, with 25th Guards Rifle Division supporting from the north, the Soviets launched their main attack from the east, spearheaded by 659th Rifle Regiment of the 155th Rifle Division and just south of them, all three Rifle Regiments of the 151st Rifle. Armor support for this assault was provided by T34/85's from the 3rd Tank Brigade, 23rd Tank Corps. Defending the marshaling yard were elements of Panzergrenadier-Regiment 93, Panzer-Division 13 which had established a formidable defensive line along the railways, anchored by the fortified railway station area, complete with four-deep railcars outfitted with machine guns with interlocking fields of fire covering the approaches. By the close of the day, the Soviets had captured the railway station and cleared the surrounding southern portions of the marshaling yard. But while the German Grenadiers had been driven back, they hadn't been knocked out and were soon preparing for the predictable counterattack.Attacker: German (Panzergrenadier-Regiment 93, Panzer-Division 13)
Defender: Russian (626th and 683rd Rifle Regiments, 151st Rifle Division, 30th Rifle Corps and 3rd Tank Brigade, 23rd Tank Corps)
