Overview:
The confrontation near Bastogne at the beginning of January 1945 appears to be a pivotal moment. The Germans, whose hopes of a quick victory in the Ardennes were dwindling, conceived a new plan, threatening Bastogne from an unexpected direction. Meanwhile, on the American side, Major General Robert W. Grow's 6th Armored Division receives orders that do not seem to correspond to the evolving situation. When the German counterattack struck on January 2, the outcome of the battle was up in the air. Will the Americans, despite their initial setbacks, manage to regain their footing, or will the German forces, which have regained strength, pose an even more serious threat? The fate of Bastogne, and perhaps that of the Ardennes countryside as a whole, is on the edge of the precipice.Attacker: German (340 Volksgrenadier Division)

2024-01-01 | (A) Jeff B | vs | Steve Etzelmueller | German win | Smoke, smoke, and more smoke. That will be the plan for the Germans. My idea was to wipe out the Americans to the man before their large reinforcing tank force entered the fray. I figured if I did there'd be no way the Americans could do anything about taking back lost real estate (though Steve did mention to me afterwards he had planned abandoning some of the tanks to do this - a valid tactic, and one I hadn't considered). After two turns I had the two outside buildings. After three turns I added two more to the collection. Despite the stone buildings, the 6ML Americans would not be able to hold up to the German wave as long as the smoke kept coming. And keep coming it did, with only one StuG having run out. Turn 4 saw yet two more buildings fall, and by now the Americans had been pushed back to only clinging to the L8 building. And this force would most likely get blasted to bits during Turn 4 DFPh, tanks or no tanks. Well the tanks still didn't show, and it was time for an American concession. This couldn't have been enjoyable defense. |
