Overview:
During Operation NORDWIND, the Germans conducted a number of attacks along American lines in the Alsace province of France. The most vicious action occurred in the twin villages of Hatten-Rittershoffen. By mid-January, German efforts began to weaken at Hatten-Rittershoffen, and the Americans looked to retake the initiative across the province. To this end, the recently deployed American 12th Armored Division was ordered to clear the German bridgehead on the west bank of the Rhine situated in the vicinity of Herrlisheim and Offendorf. The initial assault required the 66th Armored Infantry Battalion to clear out the Steinwald woods located just west of Offendorf. This attack failed, but an erroneous report reached the higher command indicating that the woods had been cleared and the approach to the town was open. Based on this, the 17th Armored Infantry Battalion was ordered to take Offendorf, a task mistakenly thought would be straightforward.Attacker: American (A & B Companies, 17th Armored Infantry Battalion, 12th Armored Division and 3rd Platoon, Company A, 43rd Tank Battalion)
Defender: German (SS) (Bataillon I, SS-Police-Regiment 2 and 'Jagdschutzen')

2024-02-02 | (A) Paolo Cariolato | vs | Federico Corso | German (SS) win | I find this scenario very unbalanced in favor of the attacking americans. It's true that you just need to have an unbroken unit in the village, but that's a difficult one to achieve. Don't even try to be creative with those tank hunters, you'll need every man to hold the village and the PSK more than the men. don't give targets to those pesky mortars and keep the GUN out of the woods and/or out of mortars sights (W1 is a good choice). When the GUN and tank hunters are revealed the american tanks will have a field day. With smoke, WP and sM8 they will dominate the battlefield. the HT are equally annoying. Be aware that if the american goes in your back it's game over, so plan accordingly. Some german units need to be positioned in the woods near the village in order to prevent an early penetration, don't be trapped there and don't put too many bodies or you'll easily lose them all. Some units need to ben in the woods over the stream in order to deny a two pronged attack to the americans. It's a very difficult defence set up for the germans and a more difficult retreat, since you don't have many room to retreat. I was able to win but only some very good rolls kept me in the game.
2023-09-26 | (D) Douglas Leslie | vs | Michael Hastrup-Leth | American win (VASL Log) | Played in the last round of the Vasleague. Michael showed why he is so highly rated as he used his half tracks to great effect to surround troops defending the woods to the north west of the victory buildings. My guys couldn't hit a barn door at ten paces and that is never a good thing when your opponent has unopposed armour. I think that the Germans need to half the foxholes among the victory buildings as opposed to the woods where I put them, with predictably disastrous results when they couldn't fall back without coming under fire. It was all over by the end of US turn 3.
