Overview:

After crossing the Clerve River at Drauffelt, Kampfgruppe von Fallois of Panzer Lehr, drove southwest on the Welzerstroos, a winding, unpaved forest road. Its objective was the road junction in Erpeldange, where highway N12 ran northwest to Allerborn and south to Wiltz. Clearing the intersection of American troops was crucial. They had to seize the main road junction at Bastogne quickly to have any chance of reaching the Meuse River. As Leutnant Gerstenmeier’s advance guard approached Erpeldange, its lead vehicles came under fire from American troops covering a roadblock. The roadblock defenders were part of Captain George Granger's composite company bolstering the battered 110th Infantry Regiment. Gerstenmeier deployed his column, scouted the American position, then attacked to clear the road.
