Overview:
In December of 1942, the Soviets launched Operation SATURN, which in a space of a few weeks succeeded in annihilating most of Italy's once proud Corpo di spedizione italiano in Russia. The most elite Italian troops, the Alpini, still remained, however, and they had no intention of meeting the same fate as their brothers-in-arms. On January 17th, their commander, General Gabriele Nasci, ordered a daring breakout to the west, supported by a handful of German armored vehicles. In nine days, they reached the hamlet of Nikolayevka, where the 48th Guards Rifle Division stood in their way.Attacker: Italian / German (2a Divisione alpina "Tridentina," 5o Reggimento alpini and ad hoc stragglers)
