Overview:

Rommel’s 7th Panzer Division had made it to the banks of the La Bassée Canal. A pontoon bridge had been put across the canal, but sunken barges and debris meant that it was not straight, and the first tank to cross looked like it might topple off into the canal. The Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders, the last regular British infantry unit to wear kilts into battle, had attacked and routed Battalion Cramer, chasing them back across the canal. Now, half a company of the determined Scottish troops, with six French tanks for support, were pressing Battalion Bachmann. Without prepared positions or anti-tank guns, the German bridgehead was weak and vulnerable.

2022-12-31(A) Bob Callen vs Rodney Callen Allied winWe gave allies the balance (removed 1 German ATR). Allied win but closely contested. Final S35 to satisfy VC had to pass a TC to move into range. Unusual number of low rolls: Germans generated a hero, got a 2 final TK to burn an S35, and got a 2 TH on DI attempt(needed a 2!), and critical hit an infantry stack with a 2 TH. Also several 2 IFT results, and British 2 sniper was very active. The Allies countered with many 2 and 3 IFT shots that resulted in CR and captured about 3 squads worth of infantry along with several CR results, and battle hardened 2 squads and one officer (the 8-0). Allies kept H35 tanks in motion (avoiding red start rolls) and used OVR to good advantage, used S35 tanks to engage German AFVs. German PzIIIF malfed MA then recalled on repair attempt, PzIVA killed on S35 but failed to kill the other. German hero and squad tried cc versus other S35 and rolled boxcars on attack (needed a 7 final TK to immobilize) and took another CR. This was the one that was the final unit required to win. Combination of slightly better Allied luck on extreme edges of results and good use of units to cutoff and capture or eliminate German infantry decided this in favor of Allies but it required very aggressive play and the Allies only had 6 units remaining of 6 needed for VC. One more failed rally or failed move TC by Allies, or low TK roll by Germans would have resulted in German win.
2022-11-22(D) Andy Beaton vs James Rimmer German winGerman strategy involved sniping at French tanks from a distance and going for deliberate immobilization shots. The French getting a 12 on a motion attempt was the margin of victory. Very fun scenario.
