Overview:

The Soviet Bagration Offensive had smashed through German Army Group Center. Near Bobruisk, the grenadiers of the 35th Infantry Division held on until 26 June when they were surrounded. After destroying all their heavy equipment, the survivors broke out of the encirclement and made for the West. The Soviets chased after them with search aircraft, mounted cavalry, and with the assistance of various Partisan bands (to include the Ukrayins'ka Povstans'ka Armiya (UPA). The grenadiers succeeded in evading a Soviet attempt to trap them at the Pripyat Marshes. But time was running out – each day the German lines were pushed further to the west and with each passing hour, the remaining numbers of the 35th Infantry Division's troops dwindled as weaker men succumbed to exhaustion or accepted Soviet exhortations to surrender. The surviving men-the Rückkämpfer – carried on… always moving west towards home.
