Overview:

January 1943 was a cold dark time for those trapped in the Stalingrad pocket. On the western side of the pocket, the Russians were pushing hard against the thin German defenses with the intent to carve up the pocket and gain control of the vital German airfields of Pitomnik and Gumrak. One such assault was made by the Soviet 21st Army. Their objective was the capture of Hill 19.0 NW of Dmitriyevka. This hill had been the scene of bitter fighting for many weeks. The 51st Guards, the 293rd and the 277th Rifle Divisions with armor support from the 1st Guards Tank Regiment would succeed in displacing the German defenders of the Kradschützen Battalion 29. After briefly securing the hill, the Russians sent a group of mounted tanks to exploit their success and drive on towards Dmitriyevka. But the Germans had one last counter-attack left,
