Overview:
General Maxime Weygand issued his Operation Order No. 1, in which he stated “the only way to hold, and beat, the German is by counter-attack”. The French First Army’s commander, General Blanchard, attempted to marshal the needed mechanized forces to stage Weygand’s offensive. But the confused situation on the ground was chaotic and instead of the required divisions; the French V Corps mustered a single regiment with some armoured support for the assault. This regiment sluggishly advanced south, reaching the outskirts of Cambrai, only to be driven back by gathering German forces.Attacker: French (Elements of 106è Régiment de Infanterie Motorisée supported by the 39è Bataillon de Chars de Combat)
Defender: German (Elements II/487.Infanterieregiment)

2021-07-12 | (D) Jeff B | vs | Scott Sherer | French win | 4.75 hrs | Similar to our previous game of 2d, the Germans once again have to accomplish a VC through an extremely narrow channel. Two roadblocks would make this even more difficult. I wasn't fooled by some up-front dummies, but an AT gun immobilized one of my tanks in the west. This gun would overheat and the crew would be dealt with the next turn, but another of my tanks would be fried entering the village by the other AT gun. This would at least create some protective smoke with the light breeze in effect. This gun would also overheat, and the threat to my two remaining tanks was pretty well gone. I was very happy with ,my methodical approach in the west, reaching the bridge. Unfortunately this is where things became a bit more challenging as, with the stream being flooded, there was only one hex available to cross the bridge. And this I certainly wanted to do before his reinforcements could situate themselves comfortably there. Thankfully for me these men arrived as late as possible, allowing me a few more turns to clean up the Germans holding out on the north bank. I did so just in time, but a pesky German squad had holed up in the eastern woods, forcing me to split my force between him and the reinforcements. The reinforcements were sufficiently contained, but the holdout was able to pass a PAATC, advance back into to CC with my motion tank in the woods, survive not being tied up in melee, and preserve the German victory. | |
2021-07-12 | (D) Scott Sherer | vs | Jeff B | German win | Very similar feel to JAVA 2D from the same pack, which the sceario random selection picker had just selected for us not too long ago. This one felt a bit more balanced than JAVA 2D did, and the French held the upper hand for much of the middle and late parts of the game. The German win felt a bit sleazy, with as Jeff mentioned a single HS passing his PAATC, advancing into a victory hex with a motion French tank, declining CC and surviving a low-odds return attack. But I will take it! |
