Overview:
Anguar Island had been declared secure on 20 September. However, the Japanese still held out in the northwestern part of the island around Romauldo Hill. The hill had been fortified as a redoubt using interconnected caves and pillboxes. To attack the redoubt, the 322nd Regimental Combat team from the 81st “Wildcat” Infantry Division had to attack across an open-pit, phosphate mine called the “Angaur Bowl”. The attacks began on 20 September and the Wildcats quickly established a tactical pattern attacking into the difficult terrain and destroying the mutually-supporting Japanese fortifications. On September 27 the Americans were able to get tanks into the bowl along a new road bulldozed the previous day.Attacker: American (2nd Battalion, 322nd Infantry Regiment, 81st Infantry Division)
Defender: Japanese (1st Battalion, 59th Infantry Regiment, 14th Infantry Division)

2024-04-07 | (D) Kevin Duval | vs | Dwayne Duval | A | Draw | How can either side get the needed VP ? With the Japanese HIP everywhere in Caves & Pillbox on the one side and the Americans stumbling around through the difficult terrain searching for something to shoot at, seems unlikely to get half the VP in the allotted time ...
2020-05-16 | (A) Kermit Mullins | vs | Dan Best | Draw | Wow, a very tough battle. My Americans were probably overly cautious in moving towards the Japanese Cave Complex. I did not do any searching, which hurt my cause, but I had assumed the Japanese would reveal themselves by shooting me down. The Japanese 81 MTR did fire, but a lucky shot from a Sherman eliminated it. Two DC Tank Heroes went after my Shermans, but I managed to shoot them down. My escorting infantry did a great job. Panjis would hurt me badly and one tank would be immobilized by mines and another destroyed by the 47L AT Gun. The game ended in a draw as Dan finished with 11 VP and I finished with 6 VP. Way less than the 25 needed for either of us to win.
