Overview:

Shortly before dawn the Japanese set off explosive charges on the cliff's above A Company's positions along Black Beach, with the intent of burying the Americans beneath tons of rocks and dirt. Too much TNT was used and the entire cliffside blew outward into the waters of Manila Bay instead. About thirty minutes later, while the tide was coming in, the still shaken GI's heard muffled voices and the sounds of splashing out in the surf. The Americans raked the water with small arms and machinegun fire. Shouts and screams filled the air. When there was enough light to see clearly several GI's made their way to the water's edge. There they found the bodies of nearly two dozen Japanese rolling in the surf. Attached to the bodies were waterproof bags containing TNT. Apparently the Japanese intended to rush the Americans from the water and set off the charges in a mass suicide attack. It was an ominous start to another brutal day on Corregidor.
