Overview:

Under the codename Operation Ladbroke, the British 1st Airlanding Brigade was to capture the Ponte Grande bridge spanning the Anapo River in eastern Sicily to allow for a quick march on Syracuse by the 5th Infantry Division. 144 gliders set off from Kairouan but only 54 actually landed in Sicily; the rest got lost or were shot down. A reduced force attacked the bridge before midnight and captured it. They removed the demolitions and prepared for the inevitable counterattack.

Italian squad moved to a stone building, survived first fire and final fire. Picked up A DC survived residual fire power. Went CX and through the DC. Survived residual fire power. In the advancing fire phase rolled a four on the DC attack which was a seven total. The British break for an Italian win.

2020-09-29(D) Martí Cabré vs Andy Beaton British winI put the pillboxes one on each end of the bridge but both covering the southern approach, only some units on the south and the rest of them on the north, using the stone house and the foxholes for cover. The Italian OBA was quite ineffective vs pillbox and foxholes and each Italian squad that got in LOS was hailed with fire and most of them broke. My reinforcements chose the southern approach and they attacked the Italian MTR from behind. On Turn 4 the Italians conceded as they could not get close to the bridge nor break the defenders.
2020-09-28(A) Andy Beaton vs Martí Cabré British winItalians tried to mass north of the river, but no matter what they tried, could not break any more than a single British squad. The OBA was ineffective against dug in Brits, and the deaths of most of the Italian leaders meant that squads didn't come back from breaking. A very solid British defence that I came nowhere close to cracking.
