Overview:
The village of Francoforte overlooked the road to Scordia which the British intended to use during their northerly advance into Catania and up the east coast of Sicily. The village itself was almost invisible, with only the rooftops poking above the surrounding olive and orange groves, and was defended by 300 Fallschirmjager of Panzer-Division “Hermann Goring”. As a British column appeared on the road from the south, the Germans opened fire with an anti-tank gun, destroying a Carrier and bringing the British advance to a sudden halt. The British immediately deployed and attacked. The battle became one of hide-and-seek in the olive groves as the Fallschirmjager seemed to be everywhere at once.Attacker: British (5th Seaforth Highlanders, 51st Highland Division and 2nd Seaforth Highlanders and 1/7 Middlesex Regiment with 5th Cameron Highlanders)
Defender: German (Panzer-Division "Hermann Göring")

2023-07-16 | (A) Rich Weiley | vs | Dave Wallace | British win | Played over three sessions on VASL. Won it in the second session when I had sensational dice and my opponent's were execrable. Otherwise I think the Attacker will struggle to attain the VC in the time available. | ||
2019-11-26 | (A) Jeff B | vs | Magnus Rimvall | British win | 6.75 hrs | Most of my infantry charged over the causeway, while a few went left and right accompanied by Carriers. I did get a squad pasted after missing a LOS from 60I6. I had fanned out over a wide area to try and roust out some guns unsuccessfully, but one popped up when I brought my tanks on and proceeded to blast it on the causeway. My lone HS on that flank managed to kill the buggers the next turn in CC. The rest of my men ran forward, amassing in the trees preparing for a hill assault (and scouting for mines). I was feeling quite confident in victory at this point, but I forgot just how tough it is to attack the Board 60 village. My OBA was utterly useless coming in as late as it does on Turn 3. It would have been nice to either have it early to sweep aside the hillside defenders, or have smoke availability. As it was I couldn't see anybody by the time it was available. On Turn 4 I sent up a couple Carriers onto the hill to unload some infantry, but one was blasted by the other gun. Just like its predecessor though, this crew was also shortly taken out in CC. The mines turned out, unsurprisingly, to be on west edge where my reinforcements entered. This just forced me to swing around them, which is what I planned on doing anyway, to join the rest of my troops in a charge right up the road. Supported by my rather unstoppable tanks, they did just that. By this time I was rather skeptical of my ability to capture four buildings in two Turns however, since moving up the hill is so brutal. But two fell on Turn 5 and three more on Turn 6 and I was able to hold all of them for the win. Pretty nice little scenario. |
