The German attack on Bastogne brought SS-Panzer-Division 12 to within 4 kilometers of the city center. The division was ordered to capture Hill 510 to the west of Mageret to provide observation into Bastogne since, from their current positions, they were unable to see any activity there. The only units available for the attack were Kompanie 2 of the Pioneer Bataillon and the Begleit Kompanie with some armor support. SS came in three groups: massive in the center, smaller on each flank. Mortar crew broke immediately, but the other US units laid down effective fire. Mark IVs flanked to each side of the hill, attempting to get into position to slow down the reinforcing American tanks, but were largely ineffective in this. SS 9-2 leader battle hardened to 10-2 in turn 2, only to expire on an almost immediately subsequent MC rolling 12. The SS squads rolled 9s and 10s on MCs much of the time, resulting in massive casualties and very little progress. Dug in Shermans did some damage until one was destroyed in CC and the other by (finally) a turret hit from one of the two Panthers blasting away at it for a while. It eventually became clear some time in Turn 5 that the numerous US tanks would prevent any reasonable chance of German victory, given the massively depleted SS ranks.
