Overview:

From 0550 hours on, a storm of steel concentrated on the ammunition fort and Guardroom II. The bombardment ended at 0620 hours as the real attack was laid in. Supporting the marines, pioniers and infantry were a platoon of anti-tank guns from SS-Heimwehr, plus infantry guns and mortars, plus two units from the Schutzpolizei. Unable to defeat the polish will through on-the-ground force of arms, the most intensive bombardment of all was laid on. Reluctantly, Major Sucharski, after deciding that his obligation to hold out had been well-fulfilled, allowed white flags to be waved. At 1133 hours, Seekapitan Kleikamp flashed a final message to Naval Command East: 'Westerplatte surrendered'.
