Overview:

Citadel was only two days old and already behind schedule in the north. Harpe's 41st Panzer Korps struggled through the Soviet 13th Army's defensive belts near Ponyri, until the Snova River presented the first real natural barrier. After having advances frustrated most of the day by mines and counterattacks out of the 'Brinewald', Kampfgruppe Schmall of the 33rd Panzer Regiment reported at 1635 that they were across the Snova River and attempting to expand the bridgehead. For the remainder of the day, full-fledged attacks from the 241st Infantry Regiment of the 75th Guards Rifle Division prevented further advance, squeezing the bridgehead as Kampfgruppe Mummert tried to pound through to assist.

2017-10-17(D) X von Marwitz vs David Wallace Russian winBasically this scenario presents an interesting tactical situation with some Germans being lodged in a village on the far end of a Deep Stream (Bridgehead) surrounded by Russians to the left and right and on the near side of the Deep Stream. German reinforcements enter from the near side of the Stream. The Germans job is to expand the Bridgehead somewhat (i.e. keep it clear of Russians) and to gain possession of the buildings on the far side. For all this, the Germans have precious little time and will be forced to divide their troops. I have the feeling, that the Germans' job might be a bit too tall of an order. While the Russians basically have the choice where to send their forces in support of their comrades on the far side, crossing itself is difficult due to the Stream being Deep. There are a few fords, though, that can aid in the venture, but these will likely have the thorough attention of the Germans. The Russians biggest asset is that they can force the Germans to divide their forces in opposite directions. Because the scenario is short, this mostly will mean that the 'left' and 'right' German forces will not be able to turn around in time after their task to support the other flank. My Russian schwerpunkt did not perform very well. It first was in danger to be overwhelmed and contained but a lucky shot delayed German reinforcements and bought time. In general, the units there did not inflict much damage and were reduced. So I had to make do with the other weaker flank. This one performed better, which was also aided by the more restrictive terrain. After the Germans overcame Minefields and destroyed both Russian tanks, I thought the Russians would be going down. But in the end an area of RFP prudently placed before the firing squads were frozen by VBM managed to break or pin the German assailants who would thus not be able to reach the missing buildings.
