Overview:
Word of the corridor being cut soon reached Lieutenant-General Horrocks at Malden, on the outskirts of Nijmegen. He immediately ordered 32 Guards Brigade to turn back and open the road by attacking from the north. Passing through Uden, confirmation of the northern enemy positions was made at the level railroad crossing two miles to the south. However, in the gathering darkness, little could be achieved beyond reconnoitering and preparing a hasty defense to prevent the enemy moving north. Attacking from the north, the Guard’s plan was simple. The Grenadier Guards were to force their way south through the 2,000 yards of German held road to meet up with the Americans. The start of the Grenadier Guards’ attack was delayed so that it could be coordinated with that of the American 506th PIR from Veghel.Attacker: American/British (Elements of 32 Guards Brigade with armor support from Coldstream Guards and elements of the 506th PIR)
